About these Statistics

Gender Inequality Index: This measures gender disparity. It captures the loss of achievement within a country, due to gender inequality, and reflects women’s disadvantage in reproductive health, empowerment and the labour market.

Gender Parity Index (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary): This is a socio-economic index designed to measure the relative access to education of males and females. It is a good indicator of measuring the progress of developing countries.

Women to Men Gender Parity, as a ratio of literacy rates age 15 – 24: The ratio of literate women to men aged 15–24 years is the ratio of the female literacy rate to the male literacy rate for the age group 15–24. Literacy is defined as the ability to both read and write with understanding a short simple statement on everyday life. The definition of literacy sometimes extends to basic arithmetic and other life skills.

% of parliament seats held by women: This shows the percentage of parliamentary seats that women hold in a single or lower chamber.

Women 15 – 19 married: Percentage of women married between the ages of 15 – 19.

Adolescent Fertility Rate: Adolescent fertility rate is the number of births per 1,000 women ages 15-19.

Total Fertility Rate: This represents the number of children that would be born to a woman if she were to live to the end of her childbearing years and bear children in accordance with current age-specific fertility rates.
